Objectives of Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is the treatment by psychological means of the problems of an emotional nature, in which a trained person deliberately establishes a professional relationship with the patient.  In doing so his objectives are usually:- 

  1. To remove to modify or to retard the existing disturbing symptom.
  2. To modify disturbed patterns of behaviors and
  3. To promote positive personality development and growth

 

Psychotherapy as systematic and persistent explorations of a neurotic patient’s  mental  process by verbal  means in order to help him toward personal and social integration.

                                                                                

Psychotherapy is today  used  as a blanket term which includes among  other things many diverse enterprising explorations  covering  a number of scientific  techniques, which are often based on elaborate psychological theories about a person or practical experience or empirical research and which are often  applied by a trained or recognized  individual for the  alleviation of persons sufferings, distress or inadequacies  with an  objective of fostering better personal interpersonal  social and other type of adjustments.

 

OBJECTIVES OF PSYCHOTHERAPY.

 

 

  1. The broad objective is to bring about positive and long lasting desirable changes in a disturbed        person’s behavior and or personality which will help him to lead a normal and effective life.
  2. To change the patients maladaptive thoughts, perceptions emotions and action into adaptive ones.
  3. To help the patient to develop effective ways of coping with various stressful stimuli or conditions in his environment.  
  4. To improve his social and inter personal skills.
  5. To help him to develop positive self- regard, self- evaluation a realistic view have oneself and one’s environment
  6. To help the person to develop and verbalize more construction and rational thought and
  7. To help the patient to unlearn or discard faulty coping mechanisms and learn to imbibe effective and appropriate behavior and habit patterns.
  8. In short the major objectives of psychotherapy is removing, modifying or retarding existing symptoms        to remedying disturbed patterns of behaviors and promoting positive personality growth development and functioning.
