What is Counselling?

Many people will at some point in their lives find themselve in the role of a counselor without having a true understanding of  the concept of counseling or what the role or the professional counselor entails.

 

Counseling is the service offered to the individual who is under going q problem and need professional help to overcome it. The problem keeps him distuurbed high strung and under tension and unless solved his development is hampered of stunted. Counceling involves a lot of time for the client to unfold the problem,gain an insight into thecomplex situation. Counseling techniques involveactive listening, emphatic understanding the pent up feeling confronting the client and soon counseling therefore is offered to only those individuals who are under serious problemand need frofessional help to overcome it.

 

There is a big difference between a professional councellor and a person who uses some counselling skills as part of their role for example their role as a friend or collegue. A professional consellor is a highly trained individual whoo is able to use a different range of counselling approaches with their clients and the frofessional guidance of individual by utilizing psychological methods, especially in collecting case history data, using various techniques of the personal interview, and testing interest and aptitudes.

 

Counselling is an integral part of an over-all programme of guidence, and is a specific process of assistance extended by an expert in an individual situation to a needy person. This meeans the counseling situation arises when a needy person is face to face with and expert who makes available his assistance to the needy individual to fulfill his needs.Councelling is "give advice to (a person) on social or personal problemes especially professionally." and the process of assisting and guiding clients by trained person on a professional basis, to resolve personal, social or psycological problems and difiiculties."

 

Counsellig is the process of helping people to explore and understand personal problems and develop  their potentialities in a structured setting where in clients are helped to clarify their thinking and identify their needs in order that they may overcome difficulties on their own counsellor taking upstep withthe cinslee to bring about adjustment and readjustment for the counselee.   

 

THE GOALS OF COUNSELLING

 

1. Behavioral Change. The goal of counseling is to effect change in bahavior change that will effect the client to live more productive, satisfying life as defined within social limitation. Changes may be desirable in relation with others, family situations, academic achievement, job experiences.

 

2. Positive self Healthe. The individual achievesintegration, adjustmnt and positive identification with others. The client learns to accept responsibility, to be independent, and to gain behavioral integration. 

 

3. Problem resolution or syptom removal.  The goal of counseling is sometimes thought to be the resolutiono of whatever problems were brought to the counseling relationship or the elimination of symptoms such as anxiety, phobias impotence, alcoholism, and the like.

 

4. Personal effectiveness. Counselling seeks to maximize client's effectiveness by giving them control over their enviornment.

 

5. Decesion making. To help the individual to make decision that are critical importance to them. It is not the counselor's job to decide what decision clients should make or choose, decisions are the clients,and they must know why abd how they made them.

 

Counselling. The title counselor perfom certain funcion has summed up the counselor's function in a useful way these are:-

*  To provide a relationship between counselor and the counselee, 

    which is based on mutual trust of each other.

*  To provide some degree of intervention with the situation in which

    the clients find himself and with "important other" 

*  To provide leadership in developing a healthy psychological envirnment

     to his clients and finally to provide improvement of the counseling process

     through constant individual self criticism of the extensive attention to

     improvement of process through research.

*   Counselling is concerned with influencing voluntary behavior chaange

     on part of the client.

*   The purpose is to provide conditions that facilitate voluntary change.

*   As in all relationship, limits are imposed on the counselee.

*   Conditions that facilitate behavioral change though interview.

*   Listening is present in counseling  but all counseling is listening.

*  The counselor understands clients counseling is conducted in

    privacy and the discussion is confidential.

 

There is a an urgent need of introducing and strengthening the counseling service in the schools and colleges of our society to meet the various needs of the students administrational and the educational system, for to help in the total development of the student  along with the intellectual development, proper motivation and clarification of goals and ideas in conformity with the basic potentialities and total development of the student. The student life is getting complex day by day. It is a simple enough to say that guidence is a function of secondary education
